Kai Ehlers studied direction and camera at the Film Academy in Baden-Württemberg. His graduation film Country No.1 – Herbst (autumn) 2001 in New York was nominated for the First Steps Award and awarded a prize by the International Film Festival in Kalamata. Kai Ehlers works as an author, director, image designer and producer for documentary films which have included Helene Fischer – Allein im Licht (in the spotlight, alone) (2013) for ARD (TV channel) Primetime, which he directed and filmed. His most recent film Freistaat Mittelpunkt / Focus: Free State will be seen for the first time at the Documentary Film Week in Hamburg. He has designed videos for other operas, including the world premieres of Czernowin's Pnima (Bavarian Theater Prize) and Zaide/Adama at the Munich Biennale and Salzburg Festival, Terterjan's Das Beben / Trembling at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Staudt's Berenice at the Munich Biennale and Oehring's Aschemond / Ash Moon at the Staatsoper in Berlin, all directed by Claus Guth. He also designed the video elements for a play at the Sophiensälen in Berlin, directed by Monstertruck. Kai Ehlers, who also studied history of art and philosophy, also works as a film curator and guest professor.
