Franziska Bornkamm studied set design with Erich Wonder at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna. Her installation Bitte verlassen sie den Raum so wie sie ihn vorzufinden wünschen / Please leave the room as you would like to find it was on display at various theatre festivals including the 2005 Ruhrtriennale 2005. As part of her studies she worked for six months at the Theater in Salvador de Bahia / Brazil, with directors including Nehle Franke. She got to know the director Jan Philipp Gloger while working on an applied theatre project for students in Gießen; they have worked together very often since 2006 on productions at theatres including the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel, the Staatstheater in Mainz, Schauspiel Essen, the Deutsche Theater Berlin and Hessen's Staatstheater in Wiesbaden. They returned to Oper Frankfurt after this production of Idomeneo for Betulia liberata in 2017. Since taking part in the 2010 Berlin Theatertreffen as a scholarship holder, Franziska Bornkamm has worked regularly with the directors Nicole Oder and Ana Zirner on mostly documentary based, sociopolitical theatre projects at places including the Heimat Hafen Neukölln in Berlin and Volkstheater in Munich.
