After studying set design at the University for Gestaltung in Karlsruhe, Stuttgart born Rifail Ajdarpasic began working at the Vienna State Opera on productions in the Off-Ballett-Series for younger choreographers. Between 2003 and 2007 he designed, in close artistic collaboration with Ariane Isabell Unfried, sets for plays and operas directed by Calixto Bieito all over Europe. During this period prize winning productions included La traviata, Il trovatore, Don Carlos, King Lear and Hamlet. During this time he also worked regularly with the director Francisco Negrin at leading opera houses in Spain. Since 2007 he has designed sets for productions directed by Carlos Wagner all over Europe. The contemporary opera Gegen die Wand/Against the Wall, for which he designed the set, won a 2011 FAUST-Theaterpreis. In recent years he has also worked with the directors David Hermann, Nicola Berloffa, Neco Çelik and Sebastian Welker. He worked at Oper Frankfurt for the first time in the 2013/14 season, on Hans Neuenfels' production of Enescu's Oedipe.
