Thilo Ullrich
Set Designer
The freelance set and costume designer Thilo Ullrich is working at Oper Frankfurt for the first time, on this new production of Harrison Birtwistle's Punch and Judy in the Bockenheimer Depot. He qualified as professional set painter at Theater Bremen before studying set and costume design, film and exhibition construction at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg from 2011 - 2015. After graduating with honours he worked assisting set designers at the Residenztheatre in Munich from 2015 - 2018, with people including Aleksandar Denić, Raimund Orfeo Voigt and Ulrich Rasche. During this time he started working regularly with the director Mirjam Loibl. His work has been seen at places including Bavaria's State Schauspiele, the Berlin Ensemble, the Staatsopers Unter den Linden in Berlin and Hannover, Bergen's Nasjonale Opera in Norway and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. After meeting the director Dennis Duszczak in 2020 they staged four plays at the Schauspiel in Dortmund and will be teaming up again on a production for Schauspielfrankfurt in 2026. GRM Brainfuck was invited to the Volkstheater in Munich's 2023 Festival Radikal Jung. Other projects took him to JOIN at the Staatsoper in Stuttgart in 2023 and back to Theater Bremen, where it all began. After he created his first spatial design for Barbora Horáková's production of Carmen at the Staatsoper in Hannover in 2020 they have joined forces for other projects at leading international opera houses. He, Luise Kautz and Martin Mutschler staged The Night of the Sea Urchin at the Staatsoper in Hamburg in 2019. Thilo Ullrich is an Akademie Musiktheater heute Alumnus.
