Oliver Reese
Director
Oliver Reese was born in Paderborn in 1964. After assisting directors he joined Bavaria's State Schauspiel in 1989 as a dramaturge. He was chief dramaturge at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin from 1993 - 2001 and then chief dramaturge and deputy intendant at the Deutsche Theater Berlin, which he led for a year as interim intendant. After eight years as intendant of Schauspiel Frankfurt (2009 - 2017) Oliver Reese was appointed artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, where works by Bertolt Brecht stand alongside contemporary works, and those by living playwrights. Oliver Reese is also a busy writer and director. Many of his productions are his own dramatisations, including Nabokov's Lolita, Panikherz based on Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre, Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften / A Man without Qualities and Grass' Die Blechtrommel / The Tin Drum. His most recent productions at the Berliner Ensemble were a Brecht/Eisler musical evening: Fremder als der Mond / Stranger as the Moon and Marius von Mayenburg's dramatic psychothriller Ellen Babić.
