Klaus Grünberg's back at Oper Frankfurt, where he worked for the first time on Dallapiccola’s Ulisse (»Rediscovery of 2022« at the International Opera Awards), returning for a wonderful production of Halévy's La Juive, for George Benjamin's Written on Skin. Born in Hamburg, he studied set design with Erich Wonder in Vienna and works as a free-lance set and lighting designer at leading theatres and opera houses including the Komische and Staatsoper in Berlin, Zurich Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Vienna State Opera, Burgtheatre in Vienna, Den Norske Opera in Oslo, the Aalto Theater in Essen, Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp / Ghent, Grand Théâtre de Genève and Teatro San Martin in Buenos Aires. His work has also been seen at the Ruhrtriennale and Kunstfestspiel in Herrenhausen, the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden and the Innsbruck Festwochen. He works closely with Heiner Goebbels, Tatjana Gürbaca, with whom he staged Frankfurt's Ulisse and La Juive, and Barrie Kosky, whose many productions included a Ring des Nibelungen at the Staatsoper in Hannover (2009 - 2011). He made his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich earlier this season, with a new production of Rimsky Korsakov's Christmas Eve, and makes his debut at the Hamburg State Opera later this season with Il barbiere di Siviglia. He opened MOMOLMA (the museum of more or less modern art) in Hamburg in 1999.
