DIE WALKÜRE - FROM 5pm May 21: Wotan, as Wälse, fathered the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde, who Siegmund has not seen since they were children and who was forced to marry Hunding. They meet again, fall in love and run away with Nothung, a sword intended for Siegmund which Wotan thrust into the Ash tree. Wotan tells his daughter Brünnhilde to protect Siegmund from Hunding's wrath, until Fricka, Wotan's wife and guardian of marriage vows, forbids her husband from shielding an adulterer. Wotan, against his will, is forced to prevent his daughter from protecting Siegmund, but she disobeys when she realises how deeply Siegmund loves Sieglinde, who is carrying their baby. Siegmund is killed by Hunding, who is struck dead by Wotan. Brünnhilde begs her sisters to help her save Sieglinde and her unborn child. Wotan punishes Brünnhilde by removing her godhead and putting her to sleep on a rock, surrounded by fire, at Brünnhilde's pleading, so that only a brave man should find her.
