HEAVENLY JOYS

The Heavenly Life is the title of a song from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, which Mahler set to music for soprano in the last movement of his fourth symphony. It opens with the words »We enjoy the joys of heaven, so shun earthly things« but the image of a land of milk and honey is deceptive. Probably Mahler's most popular symphony, it leaves a strangely ambivalent impression. Schubert's works are permeated by uncertainties too.  A chance to hear orchestrated versions of some of his Lieder and the Fantasy in F minor for four hands!
