LOVE AND DEATH
Liszt and Wagner enjoyed a close but complicated friendship. Liszt the superstar, Wagner, the ambitious one. Wagner's Tannhäuser enabled Listz to make his breakthrough, with him leading the world premiere of Lohengrin as conductor of the royal court in Weimar. Liszt's daughter Cosima left her husband Hans von Bülow for Wagner. Liszt went to the Bayreuth Festival, at Cosima's request, where he collapsed and died shortly afterwards. Schönberg's early works, including the Pelléas music in this concert, were influence by both Liszt and Wagner.
