Bettina Bartz was born in East Berlin and studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin. She has been working as a dramaturge on productions since 1983, at places including Graz, Hamburg, Essen, Berlin, Bern, Stuttgart, Ghent, Amsterdam, Vienna, Copenhagen, Munich, Lyon, London and Dresden. She was chief dramaturge at the Theater in Brandenburg (1998 - 2000), Oper Leipzig (2008 - 2010) and worked with the director Gisela Höhne at the RambaZamba theatre in Berlin from 2001 - 2017. During 40 years spent collaborating with Peter Konwitschny she also worked free-lance with directors including Anselm Weber, Antje Kaiser, Horst Kupich, Tatjana Gürbaca, Tatjana Rese, Arila Siegert, Wolfgang Ansel, Jochen Biganzoli and Tobias Kratzer. She guided productions of La Juive in Mannheim (2015) and Götterdämmerung in Karlsruhe (2017), both of which were awarded FAUST prizes for best direction. She also writes for the radio and teaches at several universities. She wrote new versions of texts for operas, which included collaborating with Werner Hintze at the Komische Oper Berlin, two librettos for operas for children and children's concerts; Planet of Dragons, composed by Arnold Fritzsch, won the 2013 Leopold Prize »Good Music for Children« and was performed in Berlin, Dresden and Kiel. She won a Performing Arts prize from the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg in 2014.
