The award winning, New Zealand born tenor Jonathan Abernethy left Opera Zurich's International Opera Studio to join the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt this season, where he made his German debut in Martinů's Julietta and sang roles in a Křenek triple bill. These are followed by 4th Jew in the new production of Salome, Sali (role debut) in Delius' A Village Romeo and Juliet), Ottavio in Don Giovanni and the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier. He recently appeared at the Tirol Festival in Erl, singing Nemorino in a new production of L’elisir d’amore and took part in a concert with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Thomas Hengelbrock. He made his debut in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées singing Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos, a role he sang at the 2018 Festival d'Aix-en-Provence alongside Diarte in Erismena and gave a recital. These were preceded by projects including Mozart's Tamino and Don Ottavio, Fenton (Falstaff) and Nadir (Les pêcheurs des perles) at Opera Australia, where he was a member of their Young Artists' Programme, West Australian Opera and New Zealand Opera. He is much sought-after for concert work and appeared with the Insula Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra.
