This season you can hear Barnaby Rea as Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Adam Ochsenschwanz (Křenek's Schwergewicht / Heavyweight) and Jarno in Mignon and Obrist Kottwitz in Der Prinz von Homburg - both new productions. He also repeats his wonderful portrayals of Lord Tristan Mickleford in Martha (CD - OehmsClassics) and Hobson in Peter Grimes, a role he has sung for the Norske Opera in Oslo, in Bergen and at the Edinburgh International Festival. He returns to Bergen for La clemenza di Tito. This British bass' roles for the company in previous seasons have included Soljony (new production of Eötvös’ Tri sestry), a hilarious Baron Mirko Zeta (Die lustige Witwe / The Merry Widow), really nasty Sciarrone (Tosca), Commandant (Aus einem Totenhaus / From the House of the Dead), Truffaldin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Mr. Bosun (Billy Budd), Pistola (Falstaff) and Saretzki (Eugene Onegin). Other recent engagements have taken Barnaby Rea to places including Holland Park Opera, Garsington Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera. He is particularly close to English National Opera in London, where he began his career as an Harewood Artist and recently appeared in Britten's Paul Bunyan, Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe and Rigoletto.
