Barnaby Rea's roles in Frankfurt this season include Johann in Werther, Müller, Gretch and Azarias in new productions of Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge / Görge the Dreamer, Giordano's Fedora and Britten's The Burning Fiery Furnace and Saretzki in Eugene Onegin. The corona shutdown prevented him from singing Jarno (Mignon), Leporello (Don Giovanni) and Obrist Kottwitz (role debut) in a new production of Henze's Der Prinz von Homburg in Frankfurt and his return to Bergen for La clemenza di Tito. This British bass' roles for the company in recent seasons have included Adam Ochsenschwanz (Křenek's Schwergewicht / Heavyweight), Lord Tristan Mickleford (Flotow's Martha - available on CD - OehmsClassics), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Soljony (Eötvös’ Tri sestry / Three Sisters), Baron Mirko Zeta (Die lustige Witwe / The Merry Widow), a very nasty Sciarrone (Tosca), the Commandant (Aus einem Totenhaus / From the House of the Dead), Truffaldin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Mr. Bosun (Billy Budd), Pistola (Falstaff) and Hobson (Peter Grimes), which he has also sung at Norske Opera in Oslo and the Bergen and Edinburgh festivals. Other engagements have included appearances at Holland Park Opera, Garsington Opera, Opera North amd Scottish Opera. He enjoys close ties to English National Opera in London, where he began his career as a Harewood Artist and recently sang in Britten's Paul Bunyan, Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe and Rigoletto.
