The Slovenian baritone Domen Križaj studied music and medicine in Ljubljana and was a member of Salzburg's 2013 Young Singers Project. He made his house debut in recital last season in the Holzfoyer and joins the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2020/21, during which he can be heard as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), the Astrologer (Abbot) and Elder Son in a new Britten The Burning Fiery Furnace / The Prodigal Son double bill in the Bockenheimer Depot, and the title role in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, a role he sang at the 2016 Alden Biesen Summer Opera Festival. He also sang Albert in Massenet's Werther at Croatian National Opera in Rijeka. He was a member of Theater Basel's Opera Studio from 2017-2019, during which time he took part in Henry Purcell's King Arthur, Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis and sang Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. Other roles have included Baron Douphol in Verdi's La traviata, Sam in Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, Albert in Dai Fujikura's Gold Bug and the Médecin in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande. Roles as a member Basel's Ensemble in 2019/20 included Marcello in La Bohème and roles in Al gran sole carico d’amore and La mère coupable. The corona shutdown prevented him from taking part in Peter Grimes and Le vin herbé for the company and returning to Croatian National Opera for Albert in Werther. This young artist is much sought-after for concert work, appearing regularly with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic and Camerata Salzburg. Domen Križaj has enjoyed success at many competitions, winning 1st prize at the 2012 Ferruccio Tagliavini and 2017 Ada Sari competitions. He recently came second at the Bertelsmann Foundation's 2019 International Neue Stimmen competition in Gütersloh.
