The Polish mezzo-soprano Karolina Makuła, who studied the piano when she was a child, graduated from the Nowowiejski Music Academy in in Bydgoszcz. She joined the Teatr Wielki's Akademia Operowa in Warsaw in 2017 and appeared at Polish National Opera in Prokofiev's Feuriger Engel The Fiery Angel, which was later performed at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. She joined Oper Frankfurt's Opera Studio last season, during which she sang Desdemona in the new production of Rossini's Otello and Countess Ceprano in Rigoletto. The corona situation put paid to her appearing in Lucia Ronchetti's Inferno, La forza del destino and a new production of Henze's The Prince von Homburg. During the 2020/21 season roles include Francesca in the world premeire Lucia Ronchetti's Inferno, (commissioned by Oper & Schauspiel Frankfurt), Enrichetta di Francia in I puritani, a female forced labourer in Lady Macbeth von Mzensk and the Sandman in Hänsel und Gretel. She made her professional debut as Zephyrus in Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus at Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz. Her repertoire includes the roles of Olga (Eugene Onegin), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), 2nd Lady (Die Zauberflöte) and Fricka (Das Rheingold). She won prizes at competitions including the Drezdenko National Singing Competition, J. E. J. Reszke Competition in Czestochowa and singing and chamber music competition in Bydgoszcz. She took part in a masterclass held by Antonio Pappano as part of the Britten Pears Young Artists Programme in Aldeburgh in 2019.
