General Music Director
20 years after making his debut at Oper Frankfurt Sebastian Weigle celebrates his 15th, and final season as General Music Director with three new productions: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elektra and Rudi Stephan‘s Die ersten Menschen / The First People - which was performed for the first time in 1920, in Frankfurt, 5 years after the composer was killed at the front – and a revival of Strauss’ Capriccio. Other plans this season inclulde Tannhäuser at Covent Garden in London and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and concerts with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Japan, whose Chief Conductor he is. He recently enjoyed great success in Frankfurt with new productions of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Die Nacht vor Weihnachten / The Night Before Christmas (»Performance of the Year« Opernwelt magazine 2021/22), Lady Macbeth von Mzensk, Tristan und Isolde, Schreker’s Der ferne Klang / The Distant Sound (CD available - OehmsClassics), an Oedipus Rex / Iolanta double bill, Rusalka, Peter Grimes, Capriccio, Eugene Onegin, Wozzeck and Der Ring des Nibelungen. This former Berlin Staatskapellmeister and General Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is a regular guest at leading theatres around the world including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Dresden and Hamburg state operas, Covent Garden in London, Zurich Opera and the Bayreuth and Tokyo Spring festivals. He conducted an incredible number of wonderful live recordings at Oper Frankfurt (all with OehmsClassics) including Wozzeck, Flotow’s Martha, Martinu's Julietta, Wagner’s Ring (available on DVD too), Reimann’s Lear, Humperdinck’s Königskinder, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt / The Dead City, La fanciulla del West, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Wagner’s three early operas.
