Johannes Leiacker, who is much sought after, all around the world, as a set and costume designer for operas and plays, works regularly for Oper Frankfurt, most recently on Britten's Paul Bunyan, which was also directed by Brigitte Fassbaender. Recent engagements have included productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National in Paris, Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Metropolitan Opera in New York, Los Angeles Opera and the opera houses in Madrid, Brussels, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Moscow and Tokyo. He also designed sets and costumes for the Salzburg Festival, in Bregenz and Baden-Baden. He works regularly with Peter Konwitschny (most recently on Cherubini's Medea at the Staatsoper in Stuttgart, Schoeck's Penthesilea at Oper Bonn, Rihm's Die Eroberung von Mexico/The Conquest of Mexico in Salzburg and La Juive at Opera Vlaanderen Antwerp / Ghent), Christof Loy (recent productions: Le nozze di Figaro at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Ariodante at the Salzburg Pfingst (Whitsun) Festival, Hamlet and Peter Grimes – International Opera Award: »Best Production« 2016 – at the Theater an der Wien) and Dietrich Hilsdorf (Lucia di Lammermoor at the Semperoper in Dresden). He and Christof Loy's production of Tristan und Isolde at Covent Garden won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2010. Johannes Leiacker was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden until 2010. He was voted »Set Designer of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine in 1996, 2009 and 2018.
