Erik van Heyningen

Baritone Erik van Heyningen leaves the Vienna State Opera’s opera studio to join the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in the 2022/23 season, during which you can hear him as Angelotti in Tosca, the Speaker and Guido in new productions of Die Zauberflöte and Mercadante’s Francesca da Rimini and Masetto in Don Giovanni. His roles in Vienna last season included Donner (Das Rheingold), 2nd Knight of the Grail (Parsifal), Hobson (Peter Grimes) and Littore / Tribune / Famigliare (L’incoronazione di Poppea). Roles at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis have included Simon Fenton (Emmeline) and at Michigan Opera - Angelotti. Whilst studying at the Juillard School in New York (2018-2020) his roles included Leporello (Don Giovanni), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) and Aragante (Rinaldo) and he sang Jochanaan (Salome) at the Spoleto Festival. His repertoire includes Figaro and Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Giovanni, Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Gunther (Götterdämmerung) and Balstrode (Peter Grimes). He has won many awards and the Stanley Richman Memorial Award from the Theater of St. Louis, where he was a Richard Gaddes Festival Artist. He won 1st prize at the 2016 Gerda Lissner Lieder and Song Competition, was a member of Michigan Opera’s opera studio from 2017 – 2018 and was awarded the 2018 Mackay Family Grant by Santa Fe Opera.
