General Music Director
During the 2019/20 season General Music Director Sebastian Weigle conducts new productions of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth von Mtzensk and Tristan und Isolde and revivals of Flotow's delightful Martha and Klaus Guth's stunning Der Rosenkavalier. He also returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, for Pique Dame. Last season he led new productions of a Tchaikovsky / Stravinsky Iolanta / Oedipus Rex double bill and Schreker's Der ferne Klang / The Distant Sound. In recent seasons he has enjoyed great success in Frankfurt with new productions of Peter Grimes, Capriccio, Eugene Onegin, Wozzeck, Martha and Der Ring des Nibelungen. Other engagements this season include his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with a new production of Hänsel und Gretel and his return to the Vienna State Opera, for Der Freischutz, and Deutsche Oper Berlin, for Tannhäuser. This former Berlin Kapellmeister and General Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is a regular guest at leading opera companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Berlin, Munich, Dresden and Hamburg state operas, Zurich Opera, the Bayreuth Festival and Tokyo Spring Festival. Sebastian Weigle takes up the post of Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Japan in 2019. A wonderful series of OehmsClassics live recordings from Oper Frankfurt has emerged over the years, including Berg's Wozzeck, Flotow's Martha, Martinů's Julietta, Wagner's Ring (available on DVD too), Reimann's Lear, Humperdinck's Die Königskinder, Korngold's Die tote Stadt / The Dead City, La fanciulla del West, Ariadne auf Naxos and three early Wagner operas. He was voted »Conductor of the Year« by critics from Opernwelt magazine in 2003 for Die Frau ohne Schatten (also available on CD - OehmsClassics) at Oper Frankfurt.
