General Music Director
During the 2021/22 season General Music Director Sebastian Weigle conducts a new production of Rimsky-Korsakov's Die Nacht vor Weihnachten / The Night Before Christmas and revivals of our wonderful productions of Humperdinck's Königskinder, Lehár's Die lustige Witwe / The Merry Widow, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Lohengrin. He will also be returning to the Met in New York and the Vienna State Opera for Boris Godunov and leads a concert production of Elektra with the Yomiuri Nippon Syphony Orchestra in Tokyo. In recent seasons Sebastian Weigle has enjoyed great success at Oper Frankfurt with Lady Macbeth von Mtzensk, Tristan und Isolde, Schreker's Der ferne Klang / The Distant Sound, a Stravinsky / Tchaikovsky double bill: Oedipus Rex / Iolanta, Rusalka, Peter Grimes, Capriccio, Eugene Onegin, Wozzeck and Der Ring des Nibelungen. This former Staatskapellmeister in Berlin and GMD of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona appears regularly at leading theatres around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Dresden and Hamburg state operas, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Zurich Opera, in Bayreuth and at the Spring Festival in Tokyo. He is also Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Japan. Many of the wonderful productions he led at Oper Frankfurt are available on CD – OehmsClassics, including Wozzeck, Flotow's Martha, Julietta, Wagner's Ring (on DVD too), Reimann's Lear, Königskinder, Korngold's Die tote Stadt / The Dead City, La fanciulla del West, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die Frau ohne Schatten and three early, seldom performed, Wagner operas.
