Happy New Ears

workshop concert with the Ensemble Modern

The third evening in this series is devoted to Rebecca Saunders, one of the most important and interesting composers of her generation.  Born in London in 1967, she studied composition at the Edinburgh University with Nigel Osborne and in Karlsruhe with Wolfgang Rihm. She lives in Berlin and teaches composition at the University for Music, Theatre and Media in Hannover. Three of her works will be performed in this workshop concert: Dichroic seventeen (world premiere December 1 1999 -  Cologne musikFabrik, 17 mins long) for accordion, piano, percussion, 3 string instruments and electric guitar. Stirrings Still I (world premiere November 17 2007 at the Contemporary Music Festival in Huddersfield) for 3 woodwind, piano and crotales -a curious instrument made up of cymbals with was born around the time of the impressionist movement. The title is a play on Samuel Beckett's last story. „Stillness“ – a term that plays a lead role in Rebecca Saunders' thinking. The third work is the double bass concerto Fury III  (world premiere June 23 2010 in Dresden - Sächsische Staatskapelle, with Andreas Wylezol (double bass) and Ekkehard Klemm (conductor)). Rebecca Saunders will also be talking to the conductor Enno Poppe.
