The actor Étienne Gillig, born in Strasbourg, is appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time. He tours Germany with his cabaret programme Die Französisch-Stunde/The French Hour (during which Germans learn French in an hour!). His most important roles to date were Passepartout in the musical In 80 Tagen um die Welt/Around the World in 80 Days, Frosch in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Herodes in Wilde's Salomé. Engagements have taken him to the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, the Comédie des Alpes in Grenoble, the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg, Théâtre de la chimère in Haguenau, the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and the Theater am Kirchplatz in the principality of Liechtenstein. He, and his French accent, are much in demand for film and television, including Rush Hour III, Streetdance2, La Science des rêves and Outlander. Étienne Gillig has been in charge of Scénographie for his troupe, théâtre francophone élémec in Munich, since 1988 and has been translating the programmes at the Bayreuth Festival into French since 2003.
